Phillies Give Away: Could it be the New Fashion of the Fall?

Well, that’s doubtful but I’m excited about my new, free knit cap thanks to the Fightin’ Phillies!  It may not make the pages of Vogue this year, but I’ll be spotted wearing it around the city.  Look out!

Gotta Have It!! Diane Von Furstenberg Headwear

I freaking love the headwear on all of the models at the Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2009 Fashion Show in NYC.  Where, oh where can I find them?

Benjamin Moore Aurora Paint: Pros & Cons

I recently used Benjamin Moore’s new Aurora paint to doll up the living room.  First off, let me say that I highly suggest using gray if you’re prone to getting annoyed with too much color yet bored with white.  We used Gray Owl.  The coloring is subtle yet gorgeous!  Anywho, my point is that Aurora paint possesses some pros and cons.

PROS: Quick-drying, water based, hardly any paint smell, tons of colors to choose from.

CONS: Higher price point, blatantly false claim that one coat is all that is required.  We found that two coats were crucial for total coverage, even for a soft gray.

All in all, the extra cost was worth the additional cash simply because we could breathe after we painted.  You can beat a breath of fresh air!

Moda Mio? Mama Mia!

To innaugurate our return to Philadelphia, my parents, sister and brother-in-law took us to Modo Mio. Translation: My Way. Located in Fishtown, this BYO restaurant is freaking awesome. I’m not ever going to bother with an exclamation point because it wouldn’t do the restaurant enough justice. I’m probably not the first to review the place (in fact, I know I’m not because its been around for a while) but I think its worth mentioning that I enjoyed Modo Mio just as much, if not more, than Mario Batali’s Babbo in the West Village. The plates were unusual, creative, visually stunning, and most importantly, savory.

Highly recommended: The 4 course price fixed menu for $32/person. You get to choose one from each category: Antipasti, Pasta, Secondo, and Dolce. The portions are not huge. However, after ingesting 4 of them, you will be more than satisfied. The best part: You actually have room for desert!

One important thing to note: They are closed for Summer vacation now through September 2nd. Hit it up after Labor Day.

Did I mention it’s BYO? bring that vino, yo!

Pluma Feather Accessories

Two women I went to college with have started a new accessory line, Pluma, made of beautiful feathers. According to the website, the headbands are handmade and comfortable. Now, my biggest concern is the squeeze headbands cause on your head. I’d say about 90% of all headbands I’ve ever worn feel fine for about 20 minutes and then I get a mega headache. I’d like to find out if these are truly comfortable…

They certain possess that vintage feel and I have not seen anything like them around.

Tina Tang Jewelry

A fan of Tina Tang’s jewelry since I moved to New York, I am so excited to see her website chock full of great pieces, links, and info on Tina and her entourage.  Once upon a time, her site was pretty basic, simply highlighting the jewelry.  But now, you can find some pretty cool links that would otherwise be left uncovered.

Some of her recommendations include: Juara skin care, Style Bakery, and Fashion-Plate

She also has a high-end bauble line called Gold-Label by Tina Tang

Check em all out.

Unemployed in Philadelphia: What’s a Girl to Do?

Since moving to Philly from NYC three weeks ago, I’ve struggled with the job search.  Blame it on the month of August, the recession, or simply me, times are tough in the job market (at least from the angle I’m look from!)  So, to help others with pains of searching, here are the sites I’ve found so far:

Coroflot: Design-related positions

Craigslist: Obvs!

Monster: Beware of recruiters posing as actual employers

Philly.com: Powered by Monster but there might be some unique posting on there

CareerBuilder.com: It’s all in the title

Also, don’t forget to go to your college job board and sign up for updates on new positions in your area.  It can be extremely helpful.

Olympic Beach Volleyball: Over it Before it Began!

Is it just me or is beach volleyball the only Olympic sport on TV now that Michael Phelps has won his 8th and final medal?  This might be the most boring sport I’ve ever watched.  Serve, set, slam, serve, set, slam.  Yeah, we got it.  Enough already.  Let’s get some crazy sports going on such as: Table Tennis, Badminton, or Judo (to name a few.) Only six days are left for the games…step it up!

BoltBus: Better than the Train to NYC

We needed to get to New York for a night this past weekend and while the train seemed like the way to go, I had heard about a new bus service from Greyhound that took you straight to NYC from Philly. A direct shot, Bolt Bus turned out to be quite pleasant and clean. The website, BoltBus.com, claims to offer WiFi on the bus however I wasn’t able to connect. However, I did see some others online so maybe it was just me.

Even without the internet, this service is really worth the price. The sooner you book your ticket, the cheaper the ticket costs. I bought round-trip tickets for $21 total including a $.5 per ticket.

The bus picks you up behind the Post Office on 30th street between Market and Chestnut Streets. Get there about 10-15 minutes before your departure.

One WARNING: If you are short like me, the seats are not very comfortable. They were made for people taller than 5′2″. If you are shorter than 5′2″, bring a pillow or your neck is going to HURT after a two hour ride!
